Description
Third book in the series with former Amish girl, now police chief, Kate Burkholder as the main character.
Linda Castillo has found her Danish audience with good reason. She is a crime writer on par with Karin Slaughter - and she is constantly gaining more readers.
The first book in the series is Forced to Silence and the second book is Prayer for Silence. Both are now available as large paperbacks.
The Slabaugh family are good Amish beans, humble and hardworking and with four children and a large family. When the parents and uncle are found dead in their barn, it appears to be a tragic accident; methane gas poisoning from the slurry tank caused by poor ventilation. But during the mandatory autopsy, the coroner discovers that one of the victims was wounded in the head before death occurred, so something indicates that something is wrong. But who could be interested in orphaning the Slabaugh children? And is this murder somehow connected to a series of shocking hate crimes against Amish people that have occurred recently?
Kate Burkholder, who herself was raised as an Amish, is determined to let justice be done and catch the killer. Since the second series of crimes bears the hallmarks of being hate crimes, the state sends an investigator from the state police; John Tomasetti, with whom Kate has a long and complicated relationship. Together they look for a connection between the criminal acts - and uncover a dark secret beneath the surface of the idyllic Amish community.
